Supreme Court: Prayers at public meetings are legal

Posted May 5th, 2014 @ 7:48am

(Washington, DC)  --  The U.S. Supreme Court is giving a thumbs-up to prayers at public meetings.  In a 5-4 decision, the high court ruled in favor of the town of Greece, New York.  The town council always opens public meetings with prayers.  The practice was challenged by a Jewish person and an atheist.  Justices rejected an argument from the plaintiffs that the prayers violate the constitutional separation of church and state.  The ruling said town officials are not violating the law by choosing prayer-givers who have been overwhelmingly Christian.
